vivian maier
Vivian Dorothy Maier was an American street photographer born on the 1st of February 1926 . whose work was discovered and recognized after her death. She worked for about 40 years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, while pursuing photography.
Maier was born to a French mother and Austrian father in the Bronx borough of New York City. The census records although useful, give us an incomplete picture. We find Vivian at the age of four living in NYC with only her mother along with Jeanne Bertrand, an award winning portrait photographer, her father was already out of the picture. Later records show Vivian returning to the U.S. from France in 1939 with her mother, Marie Maier. Again in 1951 we have records of her subsequent return home from France, this time however, without her mother.
All of the images that you’ll find on this website are not from prints made by Maier, but rather from new scans prepared from Vivian’s negatives. This naturally leads one to the issue of artistic intent.
In 2007, two years before her death in 2009 Maier decided to sell some of her old items in an auction, one of them being a storage locker. John Maloof purchased the locker, oblivious to the fact he would find her work inside. He attempted to research Maier, but found nothing except a brief obituary with no surrounding information regarding her photography.
